Turning a Deaf Ear to God

“Hear ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. Who is blind, but my servant? Or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord’s servant? Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not” – (Is.42:18-20). “And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” – (2 Tim.4:4). I’ve often questioned the Lord about my physical deafness and he showed me these verses in (Is.42). God has ordained me as his watchman and messenger to a world that is stiff-necked and deaf and hard of hearing to God’s truth. I would not trade my deaf ears with anybody. It is God who made me partially deaf for a particular purpose and I’m content with it. It is written in (Ex.4:11), “Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord?” Since the Lord Jesus saved me and circumcised my ears, I’ve got all the hearing I need. A million times worse is it to be spiritually deaf than to be physically deaf. Through my physical deafness God has taught me what spiritual deafness is all about. How is your spiritual hearing? Do you hearken to God’s word and obey it? Can you hear what the spirit is saying to the church? Do you hear God’s word today or have you turned a deaf ear to God?

Who is so deaf and blind as he

That spiritually will neither hear nor see

My calling as God’s Bible Watchman was from (Ezk.3:17) “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore Hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.” To be God’s watchman, you only need good spiritual ears and not good physical hearing. I praise the Lord always that I can be a blessing to the Lord in these end days by preaching and preparing the way before Jesus’ second coming. Oh, to be filled with God’s Holy Spirit and to preach the second coming pure and bold. It’s a hard road. Many times it ends in martyrdom as the wicked kill and abuse God’s messengers. As it is written in (2 Chr.36:16) “But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.”

And God’s last two messengers, his two witnesses in (Rev.11), will fare no better. During the great tribulation for 1260 days, they will deliver God’s message to a spiritually deaf world. With their hands on the bible they will preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as faithful and true witnesses of the Lord Jesus. They are under God’s witness protection program and they cannot be harmed till their ministry is finished. Then the beast will have them killed in Jerusalem for it is written in (Luke 13:33) “For it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.” As witnesses in a courtroom are asked, what did you see? – what did you hear? - We have eye witnesses and ear witnesses who give a truthful report of what they saw and heard.

Jesus said in (Mt.11:15) “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” He was talking about spiritual hearing. Oh, there is none so deaf as they who will not hear God’s word of salvation in his beloved son. “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God” – (Jn.8:47). When a person hears the gospel from a preacher with his physical ears, he must then hear the gospel spiritually, in his heart, and receive it, as it is in truth, the Word of God. It must go from the hear-ing in the ear to the hearing in the h-ear-t. You must hear the cross-(in the hear-t) and be saved. (There’s a cross at the end of hear-t).

When God called Samuel to be his prophet, God made sure he had good spiritual ears. “And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, speak; for thy servant heareth. And the Lord said to Samuel, behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone that heareth it shall tingle” – (I Sam.3:10-11). (See also Jer.19:3). Everyone that heard the prophets warning had tingling in their ears, like a siren form the Lord, that his judgment is coming. But instead of preachers preaching ‘ear-tingling’ messages, many are preaching ‘ear-tickling’ sermons today to placate a congregation who want only ‘smooth’ preaching. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. And they will turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” – (2 Tim.4:3-4). Our churches are filled up with people who will not tolerate the truth being preached, instead they want to be entertained

People in churches today do not want to hear the truth but would rather listen to fables, lies and deceits. Jesus tells us why – “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” – (Jn.3:20). They do not want to hear the truth because it condemns their ungodly lives. Instead they search out ‘smooth’ preachers who will not offend their sensibilities – as it is written in (Is.30:10) “Which say to the seers, see not, and to the prophets, prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophecy deceits,” Yes, many so-called Christians today are turning away their ears form the truth. O God give us more seers to lead the blind.

(Jer.6:10) says “To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.” And (vs.17) – “Also I set watchmen over you, saying, hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said , we will not hearken.” (Jer.7:24) says – “But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear… (Jer.11:8) says – “Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear.” To incline the ear was to obey God’s word. (Job 32:11) says – “To give ear to” – to pay careful attention. The best thing you can do with your ears is to incline your ears to obey God’s Word and first you must pay careful attention to God’s Word. You must not be stiff-necked and proud and turn a deaf ear to God. (James 1:22) says – “But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” A doer is one who inclines his ear to God’s Word and obeys – amen. He has good spiritual hearing and he gets saved.

I can look over the congregation when I’m preaching and see the different ears standing out like ears of corn. I see those who are “dull of hearing” – (Heb.5:11) and “the heavy ears” – (Is.59:1) and the “uncircumcised ears” – (Acts 7:51). They are the ears of inattentiveness and disobedience to God’s Word. – they are hard of hearing. The worst kinds of ears are the totally deaf. The “stop their ears” with their hands and refuse to hear God’s words – “But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears that they should not hear” – (Zach.7:11). These are not just spiritually hard of hearing but are totally deaf. These are the ones who then murder the messengers of God as they did to the martyr Stephen. “When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord. And cast him out and stoned him...” – (Acts 7:54,57,58). O’ God send us prophets to unstop the ears of the millions who are spiritually deaf.

God says this about the wicked – “They are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ears” – (Ps.58:4). They are the children of Satan, that old serpent. Satan loves people who are spiritually deaf and deaf adders. These deaf adders ‘add’ sin to sin even ‘adding’ murder to their sins. – (Is.30:1). These poisonous adders are all over the world. It’s the only poisonous snake in Great Britain. There is the ‘puff adder’ of Africa and the ‘death adder’ of Australia and the ‘blowing adder’ of the U.S. The spiritually deaf abound everywhere.

(Jer.22:29) says – “O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.” God is trying to commune with you – listen up. O – ear-th incline your ear to hear God’s word. You can hear it on the telephone, the TV, the radio, the computer, and by word of mouth. “And God called the dry land earth” – (Gen.,1:10). And it’s not happenstance that he named our world – Earth. God wanted the word ear in the word. God created the earth and created man out of the earth. His ears were made of the ear-th. Amen. But Adam and Eve turned a deaf ear to God and sinned and death was their punishment. Because of sin man returns to the earth at death. The saved, born again Christians’ body in the grave awaits the word of the Lord Jesus as Lazarus did – Micheal L. Storti – come forth. Lazarus heard him – the Word of Life – and resurrected from death and we shall hear Him also and our ears shall come alive first and we shall resurrect with new glorified bodies. Because we hearkened unto God’s Word when we were alive, we shall hear him after we die – praise the Lord Jesus. O’ there is no more important thing on planet earth than hearing God’s word. Do you hear it – “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” – (Jn.11:25).

In (Mt.13:3-23) we have the parable of the sower sowing the word of God. Four different kinds of people heard the word of God and responded differently... the fourth had the right kind of ears – Godly ears. They received God’s word after they heard it and were born again of the incorruptible seed and produced good fruit. They were the fruit bearers and the ears of corn are the fruit. These are the people who are ear-marked for heaven. It all depends on your spiritual ears. This is the human harvest that our heavenly father will reap because he is the great husbandman. God is so concerned with the human fruit of the womb that he offered up his only begotten son on the cross. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – (Jn.3:16).

Are you saved today? “So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God” – (Rom.10:17). Repent of your sins and call upon the Lord Jesus to save you. Incline your ear to God’s word and obey it. Don’t stop-up your ears to God’s word of grace and truth. Don’t reject forgiveness of sins and God’s amazing grace in his beloved son and eternal life. Receive the gift of God and his mercy and kindness and love. Do not turn a deaf ear or a careless heart. I preach the gospel in God’s name to bring you the free gift of Christ. The highest manifestation of the God of grace is seen when God gave his son to save this lost world. “But not as the offense, so also is the free gift, for if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many” – (Rom.5:15).

Don’t turn a deaf ear to God
